Ways to love your home with tips to cut the clutter out
Happy New Year, time to clean and refresh your home. Once the decorations are packed away and the tree has hit the curb for pick up many of us get the urge to purge and organize the house. Here are some easy ways to love your home all over again.
Every New Year I have the resolution to spend more “present quality time” with my family, like less TV or time on social media. To help ensure I keep to this resolution I try to keep the counters, kitchen table, coffee table clutter free. It allows more room for games, arts and crafts, all those good family activities. Less work you have to do clear the space the more likely you will start these activities.
To help keep things clutter free I love a good bin or basket for all the kiddos stuff! They instantly make a room more organized and allow for quick clean up. We keep two large woven baskets in our living room. One for plush toys, small figures, and baby toys. The other is for throw blankets, kids pillows, baby blankets, and lovies. We can easily all toss them in when cleaning up. Target and Homegoods sell large decorative basket that are sure to go with your decor taste.
Another must do is buying shoe box sized or smaller clear plastic boxes for kids craft supplies. Tossing crayons into a zip lock bag just won’t cut it. Place the paint, brushes, markers, pencils and stickers in clear boxes. They can easily be stored and visible when you want to use them.
As for the pantry a good annual clean out and purge is a necessary task. Pull out all the random cans, boxes, and baking supplies to see what has expired or what you don’t plan to use anytime soon. It also is a great way to take inventory of pantry staples you made need to reorder. I clearly let go of our pantry situation (see above) and the random, shoved, and overstuffed food items was really getting to me. I felt like I was re-buying things I already had (because they were hidden) and therefore spending more than I needed to.
To help organize the pantry I highly recommend purchasing plastic containers/bins. Group like items together, like baking, cooking, cans, and snacks. Take individual packaged items out of their box and use a basket or container instead. It frees up so much space. Also put the most used items on the shelves that are most accessible. Kids snacks can go lower so its easier for little hands to grab when they want something. Leave the big bulky and rarely used items on the top or bottom
And if you have a linen closet that is bursting at the seams with towels, sheets, and blankets I highly suggest closet baskets. I’ve learned from “opps I had an accident in the bed” to “oh no the baby spit up again in her crib” that having a linen closet organized by use and bed size is critical! There is nothing more that I hate that in the middle of the night digging for a clean sheet or blanket for one of the kids beds. I also donated all of our older towels and blankets that we rarely used to a local animal shelter.
Here are some of may favorite finds for storage around the house.
Hope this helped to love your happy home again! Less time searching or cleaning up items in your home frees your time leaving you able to spend time doing what you really love. Enjoy!
